Kisan Sabha activists hold demonstration in Rohtak

Activists of the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) held a protest demonstration in Rohtak on Monday to oppose the visit of US Vice President JD Vance to India, who is here for bilateral talks on tariff and trade negotiations.

The demonstration was part of a nationwide agitation called by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) and the AIKS to register Indian farmers’ strong opposition against the Trump administration over the issue of tariffs.

Addressing a farmers’ gathering at the local grain market, AIKS national vice president Inderjit Singh questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence on the issue. He referred to former US President Donald Trump’s public claim that India had agreed to lower tariffs on American goods and open its agriculture sector to the US imports.

“Such agreements could prove disastrous for millions of Indian farmers and agricultural workers, as well as for national food security. Hence, the people need to understand the long-term implications of these policies,” Singh said.

Jagmati Sangwan, vice president, the All India Democratic Women’s Association, urged the government to stand firm against external pressure and “not deceive the people of India, to whom it is ultimately accountable”.

Sumit Dalal, AIKS Haryana state general secretary, cautioned that “India is not for sale”. He linked the National Policy Framework on Agricultural Marketing (NPFAM) — released on November 25 last year — to what he called a broader plan by the Modi government to facilitate corporate control over the agriculture sector.
