Farmers suffer as power supply to fields disrupted for 10 days in Sirsa district

Farmers in several villages of Sirsa district are facing major problems due to a 10-day power cut on agricultural (AP) feeders linked to Masitan, Khuian Malkana and Desujodha substations. Villages, including Mithri, Panniwala Ruldu, Kingre, Tappi and Malikpura, have been without three phase electricity needed to run tubewells for irrigating fields. With canals closed, farmers are completely dependent on electricity for irrigating their crops.

Angry over the situation, farmers from Mithri gathered to protest and later headed to Dabwali to meet Electricity Department officials. They said the AP feeder from Khuian Malkana substation, which supplies power to their fields, had been out of service for 10 days. As a result, sowing had stopped, green fodder was drying up and animals in fields were dying due to shortage of water. Farmer Hardeep Singh said they were told that there was a technical fault at the Chormar power station. However, no clear answer was given on when power would be restored, he said. Other farmers, including Bhupender Singh, Kala Singh and Sumanpreet Singh, said the issue was not limited to one village. They said multiple feeders across the region were affected.

Officials said due to a fault at the 220 kV Chormar power station, AP feeders from Khuian Malkana, Masitan and Desujodha were temporarily connected to the Dabwali 132 kV station, causing it to overload. Power was cut to protect the system, they said. According to officials, Khuian Malkana was connected to the Jandwala 33 kV substation, but supply would resume only after receiving written consent from the village panchayat for a scheduled night time power release, they said.

Confirming the fault, SDO Pradeep Bana said, “Efforts are being made to manage load and resume power supply soon.”
