80-yr-old dead, 7 injured as car plunges into nullah

An 80-year-old man was killed and seven others were injured when the car they were travelling in skidded off the road and fell into a nullah at Pukhri on the Chamba-Tissa road late on Sunday. The victim has been identified as Gurdhyan Singh.

According to the police, victims were returning from a wedding when the driver lost control over the vehicle. The car plunged into the nullah, leaving all occupants seriously injured. Locals and police responded swiftly, rescuing the injured and transporting them to the Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru Government Medical College, Chamba, where Gurdhyan succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

Superintendent of Police Abhishek Yadav said the body had been handed over to the family after conducting autopsy. A case had been registered and investigations were ongoing to ascertain the cause of the accident, he added.

Meanwhile, Chamba district faced severe disruption due to heavy rainfall on Sunday. The Salooni-Langera-Bhadarwah main road was blocked and a culvert near the raging Kihar stream was washed away. In Bhandal, a vehicle was swept away by a heavily flooded stream. The Public Works Department has partially restored the affected roads.
