Bassi Pathana teen’s organ donation saves three lives

In a poignant act of courage and compassion, the family of 17-year-old Harpreet Kaur from Bassi Pathana, Fatehgarh Sahib, transformed personal tragedy into a lifesaving legacy by donating her organs after she was declared brain dead at PGIMER, Chandigarh.

Harpreet, a bright BCA student, sustained critical injuries from a fall and was admitted to PGIMER on April 17. Despite the best efforts of medical teams, she was declared brain dead on April 20. In a moment of unimaginable grief, her father, Surinder Singh, took the decision to donate all her viable organs, offering a new lease on life to three terminally ill patients.

Her liver was successfully transplanted into a 51-year-old man from Mohali. A 25-year-old woman from Solan received her kidney and pancreas, while the second kidney was given to a 36-year-old man from Chandigarh. All transplant surgeries were carried out at PGIMER.

“Harpreet was full of kindness,” said her father. “We’ve lost her, but knowing others are alive because of her gives us strength.”

Prof Vivek Lal, Director, PGIMER, lauded the family’s decision, calling it an ‘enduring act of generosity.’ Prof TD Yadav, who led the liver transplant, emphasised the complexity and reward of such surgeries. Prof Vipin Koushal, Nodal Officer, ROTTO PGIMER, hailed the family’s decision as “deeply inspiring” and a powerful message in support of organ donation.

The donation not only saved lives but also reinforced the critical importance of organ donation, offering hope amid profound grief.
