Bhopal: 1 In 5 Cases In Family Court Pertain To Arranged Marriage Via Matrimony Sites

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): In about 20% of marital dispute cases filed in Bhopal district family court every month, marriages are arranged through matchmaking sites.

These sites help the wannabe man and wife ensure that they are compatible in terms of physique, age, education and social and economic status but there is no way to check emotional and mental compatibility. And that leads to cracks developing in the alliance sooner or later.

Family court counsellor Shail Awasthi handles nearly 40 cases every month. In about 10 cases, she finds that the couple had met on a matrimonial site. And the same is the case with other counsellors.

“The problem with long-distance weddings arranged through matrimonial sites is that you focus too much on looks, educational qualifications and social status but forget that emotional and mental compatibility that are key to successful relationships. Complexion or height or the degrees you hold are much less important” Awasthi told Free Press.

Caught cheating

A businessman has filed for divorce from her engineering graduate wife. Both look like a made-for-each-other couple. Smart, handsome, well-educated and financially well-off. Both are from Bhopal and had tied the knot three years ago through a well-known matrimonial site. The wife used to work online.

The man had to travel a lot in connection with his business. The woman soon developed affection for another man and once the husband came to know of it, he insisted that he wanted divorce. He has filed for divorce. He said he was ready to pay as much as his wife wanted as alimony but would not live with her any longer.

Parted ways

A woman resident of Lucknow met her businessman husband on a matrimonial site. They got married in 2012 and have a 12-year-old daughter.

The woman is a bachelor in engineering and the man, who used to run his business in Bhopal at the time of the wedding, has moved to Pune. Like in the other case, the woman developed extra-marital relations. The man came to know of it and they have parted ways by mutual consent.
