On Whose Command Did Lord Parshuram Kill His Mother?

According to mythology, Lord Parshuram was the fourth son of Rishi Jamadagni and Mata Renuka. He had four elder brothers. Along with being obedient, he also had a fierce temperament.

Once, Rishi Jamadagni ordered all his sons to kill their mother. The first three sons refused to obey, but Lord Parshuram, following his father's command, beheaded his mother without hesitation. Pleased with his obedience, Rishi Jamadagni granted Parshuram three boons.

What were those boons, and why did Parshuram kill his mother? Let’s uncover the story behind this act.

Why Did Lord Parshuram Kill His Mother?

One day, while all the sons were away in the forest for work, Mata Renuka went to the lake for a bath. At the same time, King Chitraratha was also enjoying a boat ride there. Seeing him, Renuka’s mind became momentarily distracted, and in that state, she returned to the ashram.

When Rishi Jamadagni saw her condition, he realised everything through his divine vision. He became extremely angry and ordered his sons to kill their mother. However, all of them refused. Enraged, the sage cursed them and took away their power of reasoning.

Just then, Parshuram arrived and, without hesitation, obeyed his father’s command by beheading his mother.

Lord Parshuram Asked For Three Boons

Rishi Jamadagni was very pleased with Lord Parshuram and asked him to request boons. Parshuram asked for three boons, and his father fulfilled all his wishes.

  • That Mata Renuka be brought back to life.
  • That all his four brothers be restored to normal.
  • That he should never face defeat and be blessed with a long life.
