Diarrhoea Outbreak Spreads in Bhubaneswar, Six College Students Affected

Bhubaneswar: The diarrhoea outbreak in Bhubaneswar has spread to new areas, with six students from Gandhi Vidyapith Higher Secondary School in Dumuduma falling ill, raising concerns about the effectiveness of preventive measures by the health department.

This follows last week’s outbreak in Chandrasekharpur area, where 140 residents of Neelamadhav Nivas in Ward No. 13 were affected, reporting symptoms like loose motion, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Sulochana Das attributed the latest cases to suspected contaminated water.

“Water samples from four locations in the college and its hostel have been sent for laboratory testing. A health department team is monitoring the situation on-site, and the condition of all six students is stable,” she said.

The recurring outbreaks have sparked questions about water quality and the health department’s response to curb the disease’s spread in the state capital. Authorities are yet to release findings from the water tests as residents await stronger action to contain the situation.
