IIT Kharagpur Student Found Dead In Hostel Room, Police Suspect Suicide

A 22-year-old student at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur was found dead in his hostel room on Sunday. The police suspect that the fourth-year student from Maharashtra died by suicide. 

This is the second such case on the IIT Kharagpur campus this year.

In an email to the campus community, the institute informed about the student's death.  “As we mourn [the] passing of our beloved student, we urge you to approach counselling and support services available...in case such support is needed.”

The student was found dead after his classmates knocked at his door and got no response. They alerted the authorities who informed the police and the cops recovered the body, reported Hindustan Times.

In January, a 21-year-old student died of suspected suicide in his hostel room on campus. Shaon Malik's parents had driven from south Kolkata to meet him on a Sunday morning with home-cooked food when they found his body hanging from the iron grille of his hostel windows. 

Shaon, a third-year student of electrical engineering had a good academic record, described as "academically gifted," according to The Times of India. He was also involved in extra-curricular activities: a nine-pointer, a member of the institute's Bengali dramatic society. 

In February, a 19-year-old student was found dead in her hostel room in IIT-Roorkee. Anshu Malaiya, a resident of Itarsi in Madhya Pradesh was alone in her room at Kasturba Bhavan. Later when a fellow student came to meet her but found the door locked from inside and alerted the authorities. 

No suicide note was found and the police launched an investigation into the cause of the incident. 

According to the police, the second-year BTech student was performing well academically and had cleared all her exams so far. However, the reasons behind her suicide were not known. Her family also declined to speak with the media about the incident.
