Pune Railway Station Redevelopment Gains Momentum; Major Remodelling Work Set For Early 2026
The most awaited remodelling of Pune Railway Station is finally set to gain momentum. The railway administration has finalised a comprehensive plan to modernise the station’s platforms and yard. Preliminary work has already begun, and tenders for the remaining tasks will be floated soon, said Hemant Behera, Public Relations Officer (PRO) and Divisional Commercial Manager (Pune Division).
The redevelopment of Pune Station has been in discussion for several years, with two to three master plans previously prepared but never executed due to the necessity of cancellations and rerouting caused by operational challenges.
A large number of passengers come to Pune from other states, especially during summer holidays, and passengers could face inconvenience due to the renovation work. However, the preparation is underway, and yard remodelling work is expected to begin soon.
To avoid any inconvenience and ensure smooth operations, the railway administration has set a deadline to complete Hadapsar and Khadki stations. These will serve as alternative terminals during the Pune Railway Station construction.
Two new platforms will be constructed, and the length of four existing platforms will be extended. Initial groundwork for these developments has already commenced. The engineering department of the railways has drawn up the technical layout, and a tendering process will soon follow to initiate full-scale work. Efforts will be made to minimise inconvenience to passengers during peak travel times.
Major work expected to start next year
The main phase of Pune Station’s remodelling is expected to begin between February and March next year. Completion may take around two to three months. During this period, a significant number of trains may be cancelled, impacting many travellers. To offset this, the administration plans to operate some trains from the Hadapsar and Khadki terminals.
18 special trains, 576 summer special train trips announced
In response to increased demand during the summer holidays, the Pune Railway Division has announced 18 special trains, which will make a total of 576 trips over the next two to two and a half months. These trains will connect key destinations including Danapur, Katihar, Kolhapur, Harangul, and Nagpur, offering significant relief to passengers.
Special Trains and Routes
Special trains will operate on routes such as Pune-Danapur, Pune-Kazipet, Kolhapur-Katihar, Daund-Solapur-Kolhapur, Kolhapur-Harangul, and Pune-Nagpur. Each train is scheduled for approximately 10 to 20 trips, while long-distance services like those to Kalaburagi, Danapur, and Nizamuddin may run 30 to 64 times during this period.
