Aamir Khan gets candid about 'Sitaare Zameen Par', calls it a thematical sequel to 'Taare Zameen Par': 'My character is very rude, politically incorrect'

While at the International Macau Comedy Festival in China, Aamir Khan, in an interview given to a local channel, opened up about Sitaare Zameen Par, a sequel to his acclaimed 2007 film Taare Zameen Par. Revealing that it's more of a "thematic" sequel than a continuation of the first film's story, the actor said the film relatively "goes ten steps ahead" in terms of the theme and shared that it also tells a story of people with different abilities. "It's about inclusion, love, friendship, and life," he said, adding that, unlike the first, Sitaare Zameen Par will be a comedy despite having the same theme.

Taare Zameen Par, which had Aamir Khan playing an art teacher who helps a dyslexic boy, played by Darsheel Safary, was made in collaboration with creative director and scriptwriter Amol Gupte, the filmmaker behind such films as Stanley ka Dabba and Hawa Hawaai.

Speaking about his character in Taare Zameen Par, Aamir reveals that 'Gulshan' is diametrically opposite to Nikumbh, his "sensitive" character in the former. "Gulshan's personality is exactly the opposite of Nikumbh. He is not sensitive at all: he is very rude and politically incorrect, insults everybody, fights with his wife and mother, and beats up a senior coach. He is a basketball coach, so he's a person with a lot of problems, internal problems, and the story is how he changes in the film and how the ten people -- some have got Down Syndrome, some have autism, they're different on the spectrum, they've different abilities -- they are the people who teach him what it is to be a good human being," said the actor, director and producer.

Aamir also confirmed that Sitaare Zameen Par is an adaptation of the 2018 Spanish-language film Campeones (English: Champions), directed by Javier Fesser, which revolved around an ill-mannered coach who has to coach a basketball team consisting of players with intellectual disabilities.

Sitaare Zameen Par is directed by RS Prasanna and produced by Aamir and Kiran Rao. Genelia Deshmukh plays the female lead in the film, which has music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The film is expected to release on June 20, 2025.
