Indore: Bharatnatyam Brings Alive Life Stories Of Ahilyabai, Dance Tribute At Rajwada
Indore (Madhya Pradesh): On the occasion of Devi Ahilyabai Holkar's 300th birth anniversary, Varada Kala Sansthan presented a mesmerising Bharatnatyam dance drama titled Nirmal Ahilya Smaran at the historic Rajwada.
Conceived and directed by Guru Shruti Rajeev Sharma and written by Shravani Joshi, the event beautifully portrayed various episodes from Devi Ahilya’s life through classical dance.
Over 70 performers captivated the audience with an hour-long performance that began with traditional invocations including the Gayatri Mantra, Mahamrityunjaya Mantra and classical pieces like Alarippu and Pushpanjali.
The presentation invoked divine blessings and depicted Ahilyabai’s devotion to Lord Shiva through a powerful Shiv Tandav. Flowing sequences celebrated the serene Narmada at Maheshwar, her governance and her efforts in empowering women through the sari industry.
A standout moment echoed with the line, “Utha Shastra, abla nahi tu, naari hai tu hi sakshaat devi avatari,” emphasising women empowerment. The grand finale saw dancers showcasing warrior skills through the classical Powada style.
Puneeti and Neha portrayed Ahilyabai with grace, supported by a strong ensemble cast including Soumya, Akshara, Amrita, Bhumi, Urvashi and others. The performance blended classical and folk elements seamlessly.
Chief guest Sumitra Mahajan praised Ahilyabai’s unwavering dedication amidst adversity. Udayraje Holkar, her descendant and other dignitaries like Anna Maharaj, MLA Golu Shukla and Dr Bharat Sharma also graced the occasion. A souvenir, Surabhi, was launched.
Dr Mala Singh Thakur highlighted Ahilyabai’s contributions to self-realisation and environmental consciousness. Amit Goyal lauded Varada Kala Sansthan’s efforts and urged more such cultural initiatives.
The event was hosted by Shravani and Praveen Joshi. Rajeev Sharma delivered the vote of thanks. Guests were welcomed and honoured by artists and dignitaries, making the evening a memorable cultural homage to one of India’s most revered queens.
