MCD cracks down on illegal high-rise constructions

In the wake of a building collapse in Mustafabad, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has launched a sweeping crackdown on unauthorised high-rise constructions and initiated strict disciplinary action against officials allegedly responsible for oversight failures.

The ill-fated building, located at Property No. D-26, Shakti Vihar, Gali No. 1, was situated in an unauthorised colony where multi-storey buildings — often up to five or six floors — have become a norm. As per MCD officials, such rampant constructions without any structural safety checks pose a serious threat to public safety.

The MCD clarified that it does not sanction building plans in unauthorised colonies. According to a preliminary report from zonal authorities, the collapsed building was an old structure where additional floors were added over time without considering the load-bearing capacity or safety regulations.

To prevent further disasters, the MCD has decided to conduct a comprehensive survey of the area and take action against similarly unsafe constructions. At least 15 such properties have already been identified for sealing, with a particular focus on buildings that have five or more floors.

Meanwhile, the civic body has also initiated disciplinary measures against staff members linked to the incident.

Faizan Raza, a Junior Engineer (JE) who was posted in the area from March 2019 to August 2021, has been dismissed from service following multiple disciplinary proceedings. Action has also been taken against three other officials— either removed from service or compulsorily retired.

JE Shri Ravi Kumar Singh, who has been posted in the area since November 28, 2024, has been shifted out of the Building Department to ensure a fair probe. A show-cause notice has also been issued to him.

Additionally, the MCD has expedited demolition of nearby Property No. 17, D1 Street, D-Block, which had already been marked for demolition on March 25, 2025. Officials confirmed the demolition will be carried out at the earliest to eliminate any further risk.
