Two students held for kidnapping in Mohali

The police have arrested two Chandigarh University students and booked three others for kidnapping a BTech-1 student Atharv Dhiman, a native of Dharamsala, and demanding ransom from his family.

The 19-year-old student was picked up from the campus by four youths in a car on Thursday and taken to an area near the canal in Ropar. He was threatened and beaten up by the suspects before being made to call his mother around 6 pm and demand of Rs 1.5 lakh.

Ropar native Raghav (25), a BPharmacy student; and Poorav (19), a BBA student from of Jaipur, have been arrested. Three suspects are absconding.

In his complaint to the police, Amit Dhiman, the victim’s father, has stated that on the phone call, the suspects threatened him that they would throw his son into the canal if the money was not paid on time.

The police, meanwhile, trailed the suspect and were within a catching distance, but the latter got a wind of it and fled the spot, leaving behind the vehicle.

The university authorities said all five students stayed in rented accommodation outside the campus. They have been rusticated, said the authorities.

Kharar Deputy Superintendent of Police Karan Singh Sandhu said, “Two accused have been arrested. We are working on the case and will nab the absconding accused.”
