The cat is out of the bag. Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has revealed that he was surprised by the Premier League giant's decision not to offer him a contract extension. The Belgian playmaker, 33, called the situation "a business-driven move."

Kevin De Bruyne, arguably the most influential midfielder at the Etihad Stadium after David Silva, announced on social media this month that he will be leaving City at the end of the season after a decade at the club. The former Wolfsburg star, whose City deal expires in June, said it was hard when the inevitable arrived. Being home alone didn't help either but he gradually accepted the reality.

"It was half a week until I reported it out. It wasn't nice. My family wasn't home. They were on Easter holidays so it was a bit weird but it is what it is," De Bruyne told reporters.

KDB said he was surprised when the club said they no longer needed him after not discussing his contract the whole year. However, he added that he doesn't care anymore since they have made up their mind and he intends to play football like he always has.

De Bruyne stopped short of revealing the details. "I don't feel like I want to share (the details) because it's basically more business-wise for them, they just make decision based on that.

"It was not really a long conversation it was just what they told me and then there's nothing. I have to accept the situation, even if I feel like I can still do a good job, but that's it," he said.

A club legend, De Bruyne has played 416 games for City, scoring 107 goals and providing 177 assists. The master craftsman who had won it all with the blue side of Manchester, is only behind Ryan Giggs when it comes to Premier League assists. While the United great has 162 to his credit, De Bruyne has 119.

KDB, who will be 34 in June, won six Premier League titles and the Champions League with City. Talking about the uncertainties lying ahead of him, he said he will soon start talking to people as he is confident that he can still perform at the highest order. "Honestly, I still think I can perform at this level like I'm showing," he said. There were reports that Cristiano Ronaldo was pushing his Al-Nassr management in Saudi to bring his former rival on board.
