War on Drugs: 5,000 new beds in de-addiction centres, awareness drives and rehab programmes announced
As part of its “War on Drugs” campaign, the state government has announced a massive expansion of drug de-addiction infrastructure and prevention efforts across the state. Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr Balbir Singh today revealed that 5,000 additional beds are being arranged in de-addiction centres, including 300 in Faridkot and 200 in Moga, to enhance treatment capacity for drug-affected individuals.
Speaking at a District Coordination Committee meeting in Faridkot, Dr Balbir Singh emphasised that political protection previously enjoyed by drug peddlers under former governments has now been completely dismantled. “No leniency is being shown to drug traders or businessmen involved in narcotics,” he asserted.
To further strengthen rehabilitation, the minister announced that six new Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT) clinics will be opened in Moga district. Services of private hospital doctors will also be enlisted to improve care in government-run de-addiction centres.
Beyond medical treatment, the government plans to introduce skill development courses, yoga sessions and sports activities in these facilities to help recovering addicts reintegrate into society and lead healthier lives.
In a bid to curb drug abuse from the grassroots, Singh has instructed officials to intensify awareness campaigns in schools, educating children on the dangers of drug use. Simultaneously, the state will develop gyms, playgrounds and parks in rural areas to provide positive outlets for youth.
