India vs Turkey: In a major step which may create national security issues for India in the times to come, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has taken a step to arm one of India’s neighbours, a country which was recently seen as somewhat anti-India. In its recent step, Turkey has decided to give warships to India’s neighbor Maldives in the Indian Ocean. The step has been seen by experts as a move aimed at positioning itself (Turkey) as the leader (Khalifa) of the Muslim world. Here are all the details you need to know about the recent events.
In the recent development that has taken India by surprise, Turkey’s National Defense Ministry announced the donation of Dogan-class fast attack craft TCG Volkan (P-343) to Maldives. Readers must note that Maldives had purchased drones from Turkey.
According to an official statement posted on X, the TCG Volkan is currently undergoing comprehensive maintenance and refurbishment at the Istanbul Naval Shipyard Command. Once the work is completed, the vessel will be transported to the Maldives aboard a Turkish dock landing ship. The formal handover is scheduled for June 2025, with its induction into the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) Coast Guard expected to follow in July.
Turkey to host Black Sea security meeting
In another significant development relating to global ambitions of Turkey, a high-level meeting focused on Black Sea security will be held at the Naval Forces Command headquarters in Ankara, the Turkish Defence Ministry announced. The meeting aims to discuss military planning measures to preserve peace in the region, particularly in the event of a potential ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, the Ministry said in a statement.
Military representatives from various countries are expected to attend, with discussions centered on the maritime dimension of maintaining stability in the Black Sea, Xinhua news agency reported. The list of participating countries was not disclosed, as per a report by news agency IANS.
The initiative, led by Turkey in coordination with Romania and Bulgaria, was launched to address the threat of drifting sea mines that emerged following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war.
