Advocate Seeks Contempt Action Against Nishikant Dubey Over Remarks Against SC, CJI
An advocate has written a letter to the Attorney General seeking consent to initiate contempt proceedings against Bharatiya Janata Leader Nishikant Dubey for his controversial remarks against the Supreme Court.
Dubey on Saturday said that the Parliament and state assemblies should be closed down if the apex court has to make the laws. He even accused the the top court of "inciting religious wars" in the country.
In a letter to Attorney General R Venkataramani, Advocate Anas Tanveer said that Dubey's remark is "deeply derogatory and dangerously provocative."
"Supreme Court is responsible for inciting religious wars in the country. The Supreme Court is going beyond its limits. If one has to go to the Supreme Court for everything, then Parliament and State Assembly should be shut," the BJP MP said.
The BJP MP made the remarks as the apex court began hearing a batch of petitions against the constitutional validity of the amended Waqf Act.
Dubey had also took to X to make a similar remark against the top court. "If the Supreme Court makes the law then the Parliament House should be closed," he wrote on X, indirectly referring to the SC's review of the Waqf Act.
BJP Distances Itself From Dubey's Remarks
The BJP on Saturday distanced itself with the sharp criticism of the Supreme Court and Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna by Dubey. Party chief JP Nadda rejected the comments, calling them "personal views".
He further said that the BJP has always respected the judiciary and accepted its suggestions because it believes all the courts, including the apex court, are an inseparable part of our democracy. Nadda also assured that both the leaders and others have been directed to not make such comments in future.
"The BJP has nothing to do with the comments of MPs Nishikant Dubey and Dinesh Sharma on the judiciary and the chief justice. This is their personal comments, but the BJP neither agrees with them nor does it ever support such remarks. The BJP absolutely rejects them," Nadda said in a post on X.
Dubey had also taken a swipe at the Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna for undoing the amendments made to the Waqf law, warning that he is to be held responsible for civil wars happening in the country.
