‘All about team effort’
How do you manage your personal life while being in the limelight?
I believe in guarding my personal life. I’ve chosen a profession where I’ll constantly be judged, but my loved ones don’t need to be a part of that. Also, I prefer when my characters are adored more than me. But, honestly, it’s a personal choice for everyone.
With everything going public—interviews, social media, podcasts—do you think privacy still exists?
These days, everything sells—good or bad. Different types of content have their own market, but it depends on the individual and how they choose to live their life.
Do you think some celebrities use fake publicity tactics?
Yes, many do. Personally, I prefer to keep some mystery around myself. I’ve seen people use fake relationships as publicity stunts. For me, relationships are sacred and the more public perception gets involved, the harder it becomes to deal with it all.
What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion, for me, is being comfortable yet classy. I love basic colours, especially white—you’ll notice that in many of my photos. I’m a big fan of linen. It’s simple, but so elegant.
Any fashion trends you’d like to see make a comeback?
Oh yes—aviator sunglasses, denim jackets, boot-cut jeans and those loose 90s-style suits. They had so much character and flair.
When did your interest in fashion begin?
I think I’ve always been fashion-conscious. I’ve always liked experimenting with hairstyles, shoes and styles. James Bond was a huge inspiration while growing up.
What’s your wardrobe situation like right now?
Honestly, it’s overflowing! There are tons of clothes I haven’t even worn yet. It’s very organised, but sometimes I feel overwhelmed with options. Since I’m mostly on set, I end up living in sweatpants and tees.
Do you keep updating your wardrobe?
All the time! I keep buying stuff but rarely discard anything. My fashion preferences change every week, so the older clothes just shift to the back.
How do you approach acting on a daily basis?
For me, acting is all about action and reaction. It’s truly a team effort. Even in a solo scene, there’s the director, the DOP, and the crew involved. The most important thing is to understand my director’s vision and align with it.
Does having a good relationship with your co-stars help?
It definitely helps, but it’s not a necessity. At the end of the day, we’re professionals playing characters. Once the camera rolls, you become that character. But, yes, I’m lucky to have great equations with all my co-actors.
What’s a typical day on the set of Anupamaa like?
It starts with getting ready, checking my scenes, and reading the scripts waiting for me on my table. Then it’s all about performing, sharing laughs, some fun banter and constantly finding new ways to convince the scheduler to give me a late call time for the next day.
Whom do you credit for your performance on the show?
My co-stars and my director play a big role in shaping my performance. Also, having a stable and professional relationship with the production house really keeps me grounded as a person and that shows in my work.
Do you think celebrity podcasts are becoming a trend?
Absolutely! I think it’s a lovely medium to talk and express yourself freely. In the media, a lot of things you say can be distorted, but podcasts present your words exactly as they are. That authenticity really matters.
