Oldest Building In The World
The oldest building in the world is Gobekli Tepe. It is an archaeological site of a temple which is located in the south-eastern part of Turkey. Gobekli Tepe was built around 9000 BC and it is an older building than the Egyptian pyramids and Stonehenge.
Its structure is circular and its pillars are decked with sketches of animals like bulls, lions, scorpions and vultures.
Göbekli Tepe
As per the official site of UNESCO, Gobekli Tepe is located in Upper Mesopotamia—a cradle of early agriculture—features monumental structures built by hunter-gatherer societies during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period (10th-9th millennia BC). These structures are believed to have served as communal buildings.
“The monuments were probably used in connection with social events and rituals and feature distinctive limestone T-shaped pillars, some of which are up to 5.50 meters tall. Some of the pillars, which are abstract depictions of the human form, also feature low reliefs of items of clothing, e.g. belts and loincloths, as well as high and low reliefs of wild animals. Recent excavation works have also identified the remains of non-monumental structures which appear to stem from domestic buildings,” UNESCO website read.
Gobekli Tepe’s protection is ensured by Turkish Law 2863/1983, concerning the preservation of cultural and natural heritage, as amended in 1987 and 2004.
