2 wanted criminals held after brief encounter in Karnal
The police arrested two miscreants on the Haryana-Uttar Pradesh border after a brief encounter in Karnal on Friday night. The Madhuban police registered a case in this connection and began a probe into the matter. The arrested accused were identified as Riyasat, alias Bhura, and Assad, of Shamli district in Uttar Pradesh. Both are siblings.
As per available information, the CIA-2 team was on patrol duty on Friday night, when it received information about movement of wanted accused Riyasat on the Karnal-Shamli road. Following information, a team led by ASI Naresh moved towards Haryana-Uttar Pradesh border, while SI Jaiveer Singh along with a team started searching for the pick-up van in which the accused were travelling. The team found the pick-up van on the Karnal-Shamli road. The police team instructed the pick-up van driver to stop his vehicle, but he sped towards Uttar Pradesh. The team started chasing the accused and also alerted the team of ASI Naresh, on the border. Meanwhile, the accused pelted stones at SI Jaiveer’s vehicle.
As the pick-up van reached near Yamuna bridge, the accused on the run in the pick-up van opened fire on the police. In retaliation, ASI Naresh with his pistol and Constable Ravi with AK-47 opened fired upon the pick-up van tyres to bring it to halt. The vehicle overturned in fields after firing by the police. The two accused in the pick-up van sustained injuries while other occupants managed to escape from the spot under the cover of darkness.
The police arrested the two accused and got them admitted to a hospital. The police recovered a huge stock of batteries which were reportedly stolen from telephone towers, a pick-up van, four fake registration number plates, a country-made pistol and live cartridges from the possession of the accused. The pick-up van was stolen from Panipat.
Satish Vats, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Headquarter, said the accused had a criminal record and were wanted in several cases of stealing paddy, batteries and other goods from the area. A case had been registered against the two accused at the Madhuban police station for attacking police personnel, the DSP said. Both were admitted to a hospital in Karnal, the DSP maintained.
