UP Braces for Storms: Rain, Hail, and Strong Winds Prompt Weather Alerts Till April 20

A Yellow Alert for rain and thunderstorms in Uttar Pradesh has been issued till April 20. An Orange Alert has also been issued in some districts of the state. The alerts have been issued due to the possibility of hailstorms and lightning, along with strong winds. The temperature in Jhansi reached 44 degrees Celsius on Friday, while in Lucknow, it was 36 degrees Celsius.

The sudden weather changes have made life difficult for many, especially in the rural areas of Uttar Pradesh. These recent natural calamities have caused significant damage to crops and property. Moreover, gusty winds, heavy rain, and hailstorms have resulted in both human and livestock casualties.

In response, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to ensure immediate relief for affected individuals and families. He has ordered that financial assistance be provided without delay in areas reporting loss of life or livestock, and that proper medical care be arranged for the injured.

Amid the ongoing government-led wheat procurement drive across the state, the Chief Minister has also emphasized the importance of safeguarding wheat stocks at mandis and procurement centres. He has ordered a rapid assessment of crop damage, with reports to be submitted promptly to the administration for further action.

Soaring Temperatures

The rain is expected to bring some relief from the rising heat in the state. On Friday, Jhansi recorded a scorching 44°C, while the temperature in Lucknow reached 36°C.

The changing weather has been attributed to a western disturbance and north-easterly winds, with instability expected to continue over the next 72 hours due to increased atmospheric moisture.

The effects of the western disturbance are being felt in Northwestern UP, especially in areas between Saharanpur and Ballia. CM Yogi Adityanath has urged residents to remain calm, assuring them that the state government is fully prepared to protect and assist every citizen. He has also instructed officials to ensure swift drainage in case of waterlogging and to keep essential services running smoothly.

Farmers Hit the Hardest

Weather disruptions between March and May are common in Uttar Pradesh, often caused by western disturbances and local wind patterns. These events bring untimely rain, strong winds, and hail, severely impacting farmers. Crops nearing harvest are most vulnerable—whether still standing or already harvested, they can be destroyed within minutes. The government continues its efforts to provide timely relief, as it has done in the past.
