5.8 magnitude earthquake hits Afghanistan, tremors felt in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar: A 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit Afghanistan at around 12.17 pm on Saturday, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). Strong tremors were also felt in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

NCS took to X and informed that, “An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 on the Richter scale hit  Afghanistan at 12:17 PM (IST): National Center for Seismology.”

Notably, it was the second quake that has hit Jammu and Kashmir. On April 16, an earthquake with a 2.4 magnitude on the Richter scale struck Kishtwar district during the early hours, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said.

The NCS reported on X that an earthquake was recorded at 5:14 am IST. The tremor’s epicentre was located at coordinates Latitude 33.18 N and Longitude 75.89 E. The depth of the quake was 5 km beneath the surface.
