World Liver Day: Children too are affected by fatty liver disease, here are the signs and steps to prevent it

Fatty liver once considered a serious health concern only among adults is now a major problem seen among children. In young children, it is commonly linked with obesity and metabolic syndrome. Many medical experts have noticed that fatty liver conditions that are often neglected in their early stages can have a huge impact on the long-term wellness of the child.
Understanding the cause
Fatty Liver can occur due to several reasons and one of the primary reasons for this among children today is modern lifestyle habits. Poor diet such as regular intake of high-sugar, high-fat, and processed foods- along with physical inactivity, are the main contributors of fatty liver among children. This causes insulin resistance that causes fat deposition. The rising prevalence of NAFLD in children mirrors the alarming increase in childhood obesity.
What are the symptoms?
Diagnosing fatty liver may not be easy during its initial stage. Here are the symptoms that need to be considered:
Feeling tired
Obesity and weight gain
Abdominal discomfort
Liver Enlargement
Dark and patchy skin
Elevated liver enzymes
While the symptoms may appear, a definitive diagnosis often requires further evaluation. In cases where liver damage is suspected, a liver biopsy may be needed to confirm the condition and assess its severity.
In addition to physical consequences, children with NAFLD are likely to experience low self-esteem, anxiety, and social withdrawal as a result of weight stigma or chronic disease. The disease can put the child and family under emotional pressure. Thus, a multisectoral care model incorporating psychological counseling is crucial for overall management and recovery.
Prevention and early intervention
The treatment of pediatric NAFLD needs to start with prevention. Encouraging healthy eating, regular physical activity, and less screen time are all important first steps. It is essential for parents, schools, and doctors to collaborate to develop environments that foster healthy behaviours early in life for a long and better quality of life for children.
Chronic fatty liver disease is not restricted to liver condition but is a sign of broader metabolic concern that can result in health issues for a lifetime. Every parent must ensure regular check-ups and a healthy diet for their child as it can help combat the disease and reduce its lifelong impact.
