New Delhi: India Gate is a war memorial located in New Delhi. It is built in honour of the jawans who lost their lives during World War I. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, it stands 42 meters tall. The structure is an iconic symbol of national pride. India gate attracts millions of people every year and is a popular tourist destination of Delhi.
India Gate was built in memory of those soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War (1914-1918) and the Third Anglo-Afghan War of 1919. The number of these martyrs was more than 80,000.
Its foundation stone of this memorial was laid by the Duke of Connaught on 10 February 1921.
The construction work continued for about a decade was inaugurated by the then Viceroy Lord Irwin on 12 February 1931.

At the place where India Gate stands tall, a railway line used to pass through there earlier.
At that time, the main railway station of the national capital was located in Old Delhi and the railway line coming from Agra to Delhi used to pass through this route.
Later, the route of the railway line was removed and was taken out from the banks of Yamuna river.
