Sirsa orders crackdown on illegal meat shops, dhabas in Delhi’s residential areas
Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Friday directed the authorities concerned to begin immediate action against illegal and polluting commercial activities operating in residential areas.
During an inspection of the Rajouri Garden constituency, the Minister emphasised that all such establishments, particularly raw meat shops, dyeing units, polluting dhabas and encroachments on roads, must be removed within 24 hours.
Sirsa said the presence of unlicensed and polluting businesses in residential colonies poses serious threat to public health and obstructs daily life, especially for women and senior citizens.
“I have been informed several times that illegal encroachments, meat shops and industrial activities in residential zones create problems for commuters. These issues must be resolved on a priority basis,” he said.
The minister, who also holds the Food Supply and Industry portfolios, said establishments such as illegal tandoors, denim factories and meat shops operating without valid licences contribute significantly to pollution and deteriorating hygiene conditions. “Such activities will not be tolerated,” he warned, instructing departments to begin sealing operations and disconnect electricity supply of violators.
The inspection also focused on road encroachments and waterlogging issues. Sirsa stressed that poor drainage and accumulated waste not only disrupt mobility but also pose a health hazard. He asked officials to address the matter urgently and ensure all roads are cleaned and kept free of stagnant water.
“Citizens have the right to clean and safe surroundings. Illegal raw meat shops and unlicensed dhabas in residential areas are a health risk. They must operate only in designated areas with proper hygiene and permits,” he said.
The Minister also flagged noise pollution and illegal parking as key concerns, urging enforcement of Supreme Court guidelines and stricter traffic regulations. He interacted with local residents during the inspection, encouraging them to report violations and share feedback on civic issues.
