IPL 2025, MIvSRH Review: Will Jacks And Daniel Vettori Praise Execution From Mumbai Indians' Bowlers
Mumbai Indians produced a perfect bowling performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad and came up with clinical batting display to notch up four-wicket win. The win could have been more comprehensive had Mumbai not lost skipper Hardik Pandya and Naman Dhir when just one-run was required, but nevertheless it was brilliant display led by English all-rounder Will Jacks.
Jacks got extra responsibility with the ball after leg-spinner Karn Sharma was injured while fielding. He took the challenge and bowled brilliantly especially to left handers. Getting Ishan Kishan stumped and producing a false shot from well set Travis Head ensured Mumbai Indians maintained firm grip on the game after quicks had kept Head and Abhishek Sharma under check in the power play overs.
“I knew I was going to play a role with the ball especially when they have got three left handers in the top order. There was going to be a bit of spin assistance so as long as I wasn't floating the ball up there and bowling aggressively and bowling hard, using the wicket, that's what I was trying to do.”
The confidence Jacks showed with ball in hands was laudable especially after dropping Abhishek on the first ball of the match and later losing Karn Sharma. Jacks later capitalised on early reprieve to score 36 in 26 balls to play a big role in hosts clinical chase.
“There was hold when people bowled slower balls into the wicket. There wasn't much dew either so I don't think there was massive change in conditions as such. We executed well with the ball and I think we understood what we had to do with the bat,” he added.
MI seamers used slow balls smartly as visitors found difficult to hit them away. Later Jacks came and maintained that pressure.
“We got away with a lot in the powerplay, we were a little bit lucky. We understood how difficult it was. To come away from the powerplay with 46 for none was something we were happy with. We thought it would be easy in the middle overs but Mumbai read the conditions exceptionally well. It was just incredibly tough through those middle stages, Jacks bowled really well,” Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Daniel Vettori said.
He also praised the slow balls executed by pacers like Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik pandya and Trent Boult. “Slower balls are effective, but it is mainly effective because of their execution, he added.
Vettori felt that they cannot expect belters at every venue and need to up their game. “I feel like no one really has control over their surface, so there's a little bit of luck involved in terms of coming up against wickets that don't suit us. There has to be more to it from our side that we have to adapt. We know that conditions like this exist in Chennai, sometimes (in) Ahmedabad. We're not expecting to go over around the country and come up on belters, so the ball's in our court to realise that," he added.
