GST registration rules changes, know new guidelines of CBIC

GST Registration: CBIC has given instructions to take action against officers asking for unnecessary documents during GST registration.

GST Registration: The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has issued revised instructions to officers for processing GST registration applications, which will reduce the compliance burden on taxpayers and promote rule-based transparency. The government’s move is being seen as an effort to ease business.

Complaints received in GST registration process

The Revenue Department (CBIC) has received many complaints regarding the problems faced by applicants during the GST registration process. These complaints were mainly regarding the additional documents demanded by the officials during the GST registration process. To redress the complaints and simplify the GST registration process, CBIC has issued new guidelines.

Strictly follow the prescribed list of documents

The Finance Ministry said, officials have been instructed to strictly follow the prescribed list of documents given in the registration application form. The new instructions also provide information about the necessary documents to be uploaded along with the registration application form in case of specific cases.

The government agency has instructed the officials not to issue notices on the basis of minor discrepancies or additional documents which are not necessary for processing the applications. Apart from this, the government agency has said that in specific cases, approval has also been directed to be taken from the concerned Deputy / Assistant Commissioner, where documents other than the listed documents need to be sought.

Instructions to take action against officers for asking for unnecessary documents

The government agency has advised the Chief Commissioners to keep a close watch wherever necessary and develop a system to issue necessary trade notices. Also, it has been advised that strict action should be taken against the officers who violate these instructions. The ministry said, this will further facilitate the process of obtaining GST registration, reduce the compliance burden and promote ease of doing business.
