IPL strugglers Chennai Super Kings have brought in young South African international Dewald Brevis to replace pacer Gurjapneet Singh. The prodigy, often called "baby ABD", will join CSK for a reported sum of ₹2.2 crore.
"And now, Dewald Brevis is Yellove!" CSK said on X confirming the signing.
Earlier, CSK had signed Ayush Mhatre to replace skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, who will miss the remainder of the tournament.
Brevis had earlier represented Mumbai Indians in the 2022 and 2024 editions of the IPL. However, he went unsold in the mega auctions in Dubai despite his base price being ₹ 75 lakhs.
21-year-old Brevis has so far played 81 T20s at a strike rate of around 145. He will come into the IPL on the back of some good form for his domestic side Titans, scoring consistently in both List A and first-class matches. He was in very good form in the SA20 as well earlier this year. Brevis scored 230 runs at a strike rate of 184 to help MI Cape Town win their first SA20 title earlier this year, which turned the tide in his favour. His 18-ball 38 in the final was critical in giving MI CT a late flourish against Sunrisers Eastern Cape. Brevis was reportedly the sixth-highest run-getter of the tournament and enjoyed the highest strike rate of 184.17 among the top ten.
CSK have so far managed only two wins from seven games in the tournament. If the South African is immediately given a chance, his first test will be against his former employer Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede on April 20, Sunday.
