Mumbai: Police Complaint Filed Against Anurag Kashyap For 'Derogatory & Casteist' Remark Against Brahmins
Actor-filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has found himself at the centre of controversy after a complaint was officially filed against him on Friday (April 18) for allegedly making a derogatory and casteist remark about the Brahmin community. The complaint, addressed to the Mumbai Police, seeks the registration of an FIR against the Gangs Of Wasseypur director.
The controversial remark - "Brahmin pe main mootoonga... koi problem?" made by Anurag has sparked outrage on social media, with several users and activists condemning the statement as offensive and promoting caste-based hatred.
The complainant took to X (formerly known Twitter) to announce the legal step, stating, "I have officially submitted a complaint to @MumbaiPolice seeking registration of an FIR against @anuragkashyap72 for his derogatory and casteist remark against the Brahmin community… Such hate speech cannot be tolerated in a civil society. The law must take its course."
The complainant, Ashutosh J Dubey, is an advocate and the Head of BJP Maharashtra's SM Legal and Advisory Department.
Tagging Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the complainant further mentioned, "As a member of the Brahmin community, I am deeply offended by this derogatory and hateful comment made by Anurag Kashyap. Such a statement is not only casteist but also incites hatred and violates the principles of dignity and equality protected under our Constitution. I request @MumbaiPolice to take immediate cognizance of this caste-hate speech and register an FIR under relevant sections of the BNS. No one is above the law, and such divisive, hateful content must be dealt with sternly."
As of now Anurag has not publicly responded to the complaint. The Mumbai Police are yet to release an official statement on the matter or confirm whether an FIR has been registered.
Anurag, known for his bold and provocative storytelling in films like Gangs of Wasseypur, Black Friday, and Dev.D, is no stranger to controversy. However, this latest accusation has stirred backlash on social media, with demands for legal action gaining momentum.
