FIR filed against 'Jaat' actors for hurting religious sentiments; makers announce sequel

A scene of violence set inside a church from the new Sunny Deol-starrer Jaat has upset the sentiments of certain members of the Christian community in Punjab. The scene in question has Randeep Hooda's antagonist standing in front of a crucifix, allegedly claiming to be sent by Jesus Christ and then opening fire while a prayer session is in progress.
Following a complaint about a scene hurting religious sentiments and mocking Jesus Christ from a resident of Jalandhar named Vikalv Goldy, an FIR has been registered against actors Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, Vineet Kumar, director Gopichand Malineni, and producer Mythri Movie Makers.
It was filed under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Aside from reportedly protesting outside the Police Commissioner's office, community leaders protested outside the theatres screening the film. However, the local police intervened and thwarted such attempts, following which the community gave authorities a two-ultimatum to resolve the matter.
Jaat, released on April 10, revolves around a saviour whose path crosses with that of a despotic couple that controls the fictional village of Chirala, played by Randeep Hooda and Regina Cassandra.
The other cast members include Saiyami Kher, Jagapathi Babu, Ramya Krishnan, Vineet Kumar Singh and Zarina Wahab.
The filmmakers have not responded to the controversy yet. In the meantime, they have announced a sequel titled Jaat 2, which will see Gophichand Malineni returning to direct with the backing of Mythri Movie Makers. Sunny Deol is the only cast member confirmed to return.
