Waqf law: SC stays denotification of Waqf properties; PM meets Dawoodi Bohras amid law debate
The Supreme Court of India has issued an interim order concerning the Waqf law, stating that no Waqf property will be denotified for the time being. The court has also put a temporary hold on new appointments to both the Waqf Board and the Waqf Council. The Centre has been given seven days to file its response, with the next hearing scheduled for May 5.This judicial intervention comes amid increasing scrutiny and debate over the provisions of the Waqf Act. Petitioners have raised concerns about the unregulated nature of Waqf property declarations and the powers granted under the law.In a parallel development, members of the Dawoodi Bohra community met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the Waqf law. The community expressed gratitude towards the Prime Minister and showed faith in the government’s handling of the matter. PM Modi assured them that the law was not a hasty decision but the result of five years of detailed study and understanding. He emphasized that the legislation was crafted after closely examining every aspect of the issue. The developments indicate both legal and social sensitivities around the Waqf law, with broader implications for minority rights and property governance.
