Tensions Arise At Mumbai Residential Complex After Non-Vegetarians Called 'Dirty': VIDEO

A row erupted in a residential complex in Mumbai over consumption of non-vegetarian food after which police were involved to defuse the sitation. 

The incident took place in city's Ghatkopar area where members of the Gujarati community and Marathi-speaking community came face-to-face over the latter eating non-vegetarian food, reported NDTV. 

Tension arose when some Marathi-speaking families were allegedly mistreated by the members of the Gujarati community for consuming meat and fish. As the matter escalated, the residents called the police, however, there were no reports of any formal complaint being filed. 

"Mr Range contested the apartment committee election and lost. Since then two factions have emerged at the apartment complex. We will talk to both sides about and ensure this internal matter is solved," a police officer told reporters.

MNS Leaders Step In 

The video of the incident has gone viral on social media where some Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers were seen cofronting the Gujarati residents of the apartment. 

MNS leader Raj Parte was seen shouting at some residents for allegedly calling the Marathi-speaking families "dirty" and restricting them from cooking meat and fish at home.

While a resident said there was no restriction on what one could eat at the apartment complex, Parte stressed that no one should dictate others' food habits, especially in a city like Mumbai.

Later, state minister Asish Shelar condemned such incidents of "disrespect" on the basis of language as unacceptable. 

"No one should commit the sin of looking down upon Marathi-speaking people, their language and their culture," Shelar said. 

"It is the stand of the Maharashtra government that the Marathi language and its culture should be respected. Creating disrespect among people of different languages is not acceptable to us," he warned.
