Madhya Pradesh: No Work On Ground, Is Jal Ganga Abhiyan Stagnating?

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The Jal Ganga Abhiyan, launched by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) on March 30 for the conservation of water bodies, seems to have been put on the back burner. Started at the Kaliasot River, the Jal Ganga Abhiyan had the sole agenda of cleaning water bodies.

However, actual activities of cleaning and rejuvenation of water bodies have come to a standstill, even as indoor activities such as painting and slogan-writing competitions are being held. BMC Leader of Opposition Shabista Zaki alleged, “Jal Ganga Abhiyan has been stopped.

Initially, it was launched with much fanfare, but a few days down the line, its activities are notvisible on the ground. Only painting and slogan-writing competitions are being organised under this project in the name of raising awareness among children.”

Another Congress corporator, Guddu Chauhan, said, “Jal Ganga Abhiyan is simply an eyewash. The BMC team is not working to clean water bodies. Even Upper Lake and Lower Lakes are not being cleaned properly. Summer is the right time, and there is much scope for the BMC to clean the lakes with proper desilting.”

However, Udit Garg, superintendent engineer of BMC (water supply), refuted all allegations and said, “The BMC team is working around the clock to clean the water bodies in the given timeframe. Not just outdoor activities, we are conducting indoor activities for children to raise awareness.”
