Return Jagatjit Club if you cannot protect it: Former Kapurthala royal

Reacting to the scheduled auction of the historic Jagatjit Club of Kapurthala, Tikka Shatrujit Singh, the great grandson of the late Maharaja Jagatjit Singh, on Thursday said if the local administration was unable to protect the building, it should be handed back to his family.

“I’m sure there will be a stay on the auction. How can the government auction a heritage building in Punjab? It’s the most ridiculous thing. If that’s what they want to do, give it back to us,” he said.

“We gave it to the government for the people of Punjab, not to be auctioned off,” he added.

Speaking on whether his family will intervene in the matter, he said, “I will intervene if the DC fails, and ask them to give it back.”

The countdown for the auction of Jagatjit Club will begin tomorrow as April 18 is the date for a notice to be put up for its auction.

The auction will be held on May 9, according to an April 2 order issued by District and Sessions Judge Harpal Singh.

The heritage property was attached in November 2024 over the non-payment of enhanced compensation by the district administration to a Phagwara resident in a land acquisition case.

The Phagwara resident had demanded that the property, among others, be attached till the case was decided, which was accepted by the local court.
