Punjab Govt invests Rs 2 cr in new libraries
As part of its ongoing ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign, the Punjab Government is focusing not only on building sports grounds worth crores to promote a sporting culture but also on constructing libraries to encourage young minds to reconnect with books.
In line with the ideology of Baba Sahib Dr BR Ambedkar, the state government is revamping schools under the ‘Punjab Sikhiya Kranti’ initiative while also establishing new libraries.
To review the progress of library construction in the district, Deputy Commissioner Dr Himanshu Aggarwal chaired a high-level meeting with relevant officials and instructed them to accelerate the construction work.
Dr Aggarwal said six libraries are being built across the district, with an estimated cost of over Rs 2 crore. These libraries are expected to serve as beacons of knowledge for the youth. Alongside the development of sports infrastructure to promote a healthy lifestyle, the library initiative aims to cultivate a reading culture among young people.
The libraries are being constructed in Basti Danishmandan, Basti Bawa Khel, Chugitti, Vijay Nagar and the Municipal Committees of Nakodar and Bilga. The Deputy Commissioner emphasised the importance of completing the libraries on time, ensuring the facilities are available to the youth as soon as possible. He also instructed officials to make arrangements for furniture and other necessary infrastructure.
Dr Aggarwal said the libraries would provide a positive and constructive environment for youth, particularly those struggling with drug addiction, helping them to break free and reconnect with books.
The meeting was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner (Rural Development) Buddhi Raj Singh, SDM Vivek Modi, Assistant Economic and Statistical Advisor Arun Mahajan and officials from other departments concerned.
