Punjab government to engage 124 law officers amid AG office reshuffle
In the backdrop of significant reshuffling within the office of Punjab Advocate-General, the state government has initiated the process of engaging 124 law officers across various categories. It has already invited applications.
The move comes less than a month after advocate Maninderjit Singh Bedi was appointed Advocate-General on March 30, following the resignation of his predecessor Gurminder Singh. The public notice, issued by the Department of Justice on April 16, aims to strengthen the legal representation of the state before the courts in Chandigarh and New Delhi. The selected candidates will be defending cases on behalf of the State of Punjab.
The notice directs eligible advocates to submit their applications by April 25 before 5pm, either by post or in person at the Punjab Civil Secretariat in Chandigarh. Detailed terms, eligibility criteria, and application forms are available on the official website of Punjab government.
It is believed that the appointments reflect the AAP government’s attempt to reassert control over the situation in Punjab amid political turbulence in the state. The party’s dismal performance in Delhi Assembly polls reportedly prompted reassessment. The changes in Punjab’s legal setup are being seen as part of the broader recalibration strategy.
With the appointment of Bedi — considered close to the party’s central leadership — the government appears to be realigning the AG office with its administrative goals.
