Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has signed a new contract with the club -- ensuring that he will be at Anfield until at least 2027, the Premier League club announced on Thursday. The salary breakdown was not immediately known even as the Dutch defender is said to have become the third-highest earner in England following the contract extension by unconfirmed reports.

"Virgil van Dijk has today signed a new contract with Liverpool FC to extend his time with the club beyond the 2024-25 season,"  Liverpool FC's official website wrote confirming the development.

“It was always Liverpool. That was the case. It was always in my head, it was always the plan and it was always Liverpool.

“There wasn’t any doubt in my head that this is the place to be for me and my family. I’m one of Liverpool. Someone called me the other day an adopted Scouser – I’m really proud to hear these things, it gives me a great feeling,” the club quoted the centre back as saying after signing the new contract.

33-year-old Van Dijk moved to Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 and is still rated as the best active defender by many pundits. The centre-back received the captain's armband from the then manager Jurgen Klopp in the summer of 2023 and was pivotal to the club's Premiership and UEFA Champions League glory.

Van Dijk was named the PFA Players’ Player of the Year in 2019 apart from being included in Premier League Team of the Year on four separate occasions. He became the 2019 Ballon d’Or runner-up, narrowly missing out to Argentina legend Lionel Messi.
