Police to deploy 250 officials for enhanced traffic control, safety

To bolster public safety and community ties, Ludhiana Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma convened a meeting with representatives from 28 diverse associations at Guru Nanak Bhawan under the ‘Sampark’ campaign.

The initiative aims to address public concerns and foster stronger police-citizen collaboration. Commissioner Sharma announced the deployment of 250 police officials/employees from non-policing roles to field duties, following a manpower audit. This strategic shift is expected to enhance police visibility at key junctions, curb street crimes, and alleviate traffic congestion.

To further streamline traffic, eight city roads will be declared no-tolerance zones for traffic violations, starting this week. Illegal parking and encroachments will face strict enforcement, supported by clear road markings, including yellow and white lines and zebra crossings. An Emergency Response System (ERS) has already been introduced, integrating a command-and-control centre, wireless control room, PCR vans, and bikes to ensure swift responses and smoother vehicular movement, added Sharma.

During the meeting, Commissioner Sharma held discussions with representatives from associations representing commission agents, vegetable and fruit markets, electronics, dairy, schools, colleges, industry, hand tools, surgical goods, sports, jewellery, shopkeepers, truck unions, DJs and sound, theatre, hotels etc. He assured the attendees their concerns regarding traffic, illegal parking, and petty crimes would be prioritised for swift resolution.

Sharma added that the state government had already waged a war against drugs with the ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign and encouraged people to play an active role in eradicating the drug problem by sharing information about drug peddlers and addicts with the police.
