Rekha okays construction of 27 STPs under Rs 3,140-cr project
In a significant push for infrastructural development and environmental sustainability, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday approved major projects worth thousands of crores, including the construction of 27 decentralised Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), a high-security prison in Narela and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at key bus depots in Dwarka.
Chairing her first Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) meeting at the Delhi Secretariat, CM Gupta described the decisions as “milestone approvals” in the direction of a cleaner and more modern Capital. Cabinet Ministers Pravesh Sahib Singh, Ashish Sood, Kapil Mishra and Dr Pankaj Singh were also present.
The largest among the cleared projects is Rs 3,140-crore initiative aimed at cleaning the Yamuna and strengthening Delhi’s sewage infrastructure. Under the project, 27 decentralised STPs and terminal sewage pumping stations (SPSs) will be built across the Capital, including areas such as Mundka, Narela, Bawana, Kanjhawala, Tikri Kalan and Jaunapur. The project also includes a 10 MGD STP at Delhi Gate and covers the laying of sewer lines, household sewer connections and long-term operations and maintenance.
“The Yamuna is Delhi’s lifeline and its rejuvenation is not just an environmental goal but a duty to future generations. No untreated wastewater will be allowed to flow into the river,” said CM Gupta. She added that the entire project would be completed within 18 months of tendering and would help control foul odour, water pollution and declining groundwater levels in several colonies.
In a major step towards prison reforms, the Delhi Government also approved the construction of a hi-tech high-security jail in Narela at a cost of Rs 148.58 crore. Spread across 40 acres, the facility will house up to 256 inmates and is designed to ensure modern surveillance and efficient management of high-risk prisoners.
To accelerate Delhi’s transition to clean mobility, the government sanctioned Rs 107.02 crore for BSES Rajdhani Power Limited to set up EV charging stations for electric buses at Cluster Depot – I & II, ISBT, Sector-22, and DTC Depot, Sector 8, in Dwarka. The move is expected to significantly boost Delhi’s green public transport infrastructure.
“These projects address Delhi’s core challenges —sewage treatment, transport electrification and security. We are implementing all schemes on mission mode with fixed timelines,” said CM Gupta, adding that clear directions had been given to departments for swift and technology-driven execution.
