Minister reviews progress of standalone battery energy storage system in Delhi

In a major step towards ensuring uninterrupted electricity in the national capital, Delhi Energy Minister Ashish Sood on Wednesday inspected the progress of India’s first commercially-approved standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Kilokri, South Delhi.

The facility, developed by power distribution company BSES in collaboration with IndiGrid, GEAPP and TERI, is expected to directly benefit around 1 lakh residents upon completion.

“Delhi will soon enter a new era of power innovation,” said Sood, calling the project a game-changer in stabilising the grid, reducing peak-hour load and promoting green energy adoption.

Installed at the 33kV sub-station of BSES Rajdhani Power Limited, the BESS will have the capacity to store and supply 20-40 megawatt hours of electricity, providing four hours of backup daily.

Sood said this system has been specially designed to integrate renewable energy into the grid and ease the burden on conventional power sources. “This project proves that sustainable solutions through green energy are not just possible but practical,” he noted.

The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) has approved a tariff structure 55% lower than earlier standards, making the power sourced from this system more affordable for consumers. “This is the beginning of a new era of accessible and affordable green energy,” the minister added.

Dismissing rumours of power outages, Sood took a swipe at critics. “Those spreading misinformation about Delhi’s power situation should come and see the work being done. The BJP government is committed to delivering uninterrupted 24-hour power supply,” he said.

Sood also reaffirmed the government’s decision to continue the electricity subsidy, stating, “There will be no shortage of power in Delhi, and the people will continue to benefit.”
