Health Minister orders review of patient security protocols

Following the shocking sexual assault of an airhostess inside the ICU of a leading Gurugram hospital, Haryana’s Health Minister Arti Rao has ordered a comprehensive review of patient security protocols in all hospitals across the state. The incident, reported from Medanta Hospital, has raised alarm, especially since Gurugram is considered a premier hub for medical tourism in North India.

“This incident is disturbing and must be addressed at a systemic level. Gurugram houses some of the country’s most premium healthcare institutions, and patient safety — especially for those unconscious or under sedation — is non-negotiable,” said Health Minister Rao while talking to The Tribune.

She said while standard operating procedures (SOPs) for ICU security exist, this case suggests they are either inadequate or not being properly followed. “A committee of experts will be formed to review current protocols. If needed, SOPs will be upgraded to prevent any such recurrence,” she said.

The state has already initiated an inquiry into the incident at Medanta Hospital alongside the ongoing police investigation. “Both the hospital and the police have been asked to expedite their findings. Any evidence of negligence will lead to strict action,” Rao said.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the medical tourism circuit, with many international patients and their families expressing concern. Translators and local support staff, particularly those assisting patients from Asia and the Middle-East, have begun issuing safety advisories to clients.

“We’ve reassured everyone that this is an isolated incident, but are asking families to remain alert, especially during visits. We’re advising them to check for any signs of distress or discomfort in patients and report immediately,” said an Israeli translator working in Gurugram.
