Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani often remain in the spotlight due to their public appearance, viral dance videos, or their philanthropic initiatives. After the success of Jio and Tiara, a new side of the Ambani family is becoming more evident. The Ambani family, especially Radhika Merchant, has also emerged as food enthusiasts in recent times. A glimpse into this side of their lifestyle was seen during Radhika Merchant’s wedding, where videos captured her greeting Shanteri Nayak, the owner of the popular Cafe Mysore in Matunga, Mumbai. Radhika walked up to Shanteri and said, “Every Sunday, we enjoy your food at home.”

This shift towards embracing a foodie culture adds another layer to the Ambanis’ evolving public image, reflecting their more relatable and down-to-earth persona. In addition, Mukesh Ambani, a prominent figure known for his business acumen, has a deep fondness for Gujarati cuisine. In fact, there’s a particular shop in Mumbai’s Tardeo neighborhood that is often mentioned as his go-to spot for enjoying his favorite traditional Gujarati dishes.

In an interview, Mukesh Ambani revealed that three generations of his family depend on weekly orders from Swati Snacks. Founded in 1963 by Minakshi Jhaveri, Swati Snacks began as a small chaat shop with just four tables and a menu offering four items, each priced at four annas. Over the years, the business has grown into a thriving restaurant chain, now generating a monthly turnover of nearly INR 4 crore.

“Over time, with innovative additions to the menu, Swati has expanded to three thriving and hugely popular restaurants in Mumbai and Ahmedabad, all family run, with a reputation for consistently delighting guests with its distinctive flavours. Swati’s innovative menu builds upon traditional dishes that guests remember eating at home, as well as street foods that are remembered from carefree days. These memories are revived in a new setting, elegantly modern, functional without being fussy, quick and to the point, a place that welcomes a wide range of patrons, from its many regulars, to first time visitors eager for a taste of India,” reads the official website of Swati Snacks.

As per a report from TOI, the eatery has been a beloved spot for celebrities and icons over the years. Legendary artist M.F. Husain was a regular, often enjoying its Sev Puris, while tabla maestro Zakir Hussain would often indulge in the comforting Dahi Batata Puris.

While Swati Snacks stays true to its Gujarati roots, it has also embraced innovation to keep up with changing palates. One of its standout creations is the Panki—a light, flavorful rice pancake steamed between banana leaves—introduced in 2000. Today, the eatery sells around 600 plates of Panki daily. With variations like Pudina Panki, Suva (dill) Panki, and Panki Uttapam, the menu reflects a perfect blend of tradition and creativity.

According to the South China Morning Post, Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, expressed his fondness for Swati Snacks in the autobiography of its owner, Asha Jhaveri, titled Swati Snacks. Featured on the grey-yellow cover of the book is a quote from Ambani himself,” We are three generations of the Ambani family who cannot live without ordering from Swati Snacks every week.”

Jhaveri, whose two nephews now help manage the restaurant chain, revealed that Mukesh Ambani’s favorite dishes include classic chaat items such as sev puri, paani puri, and dahi batata puri. The latter—a beloved street food—is made with crispy fried dumplings topped with creamy yogurt, tangy tamarind chutney, sprouted lentils, and a sprinkle of freshly chopped coriander, creating a burst of flavors in every bite, reported South China Morning Post.

“The Ambani couple – Mukesh and his wife Nita – used to visit our joint quite frequently, and would often stand in the queue to get in, but now they mostly order takeaways. We recognise their staff from their uniform when they come in to pick up the food,” Jhaveri was quoted as saying to the South China Morning Post(2022).

In other words, Mukesh Ambani is a regular visitor at Mumbai’s Swati Snacks, a popular eatery known for its authentic Gujarati cuisine. The restaurant boasts a diverse menu featuring dishes like satpadi roti, gatta nu shaak, and fada ni khichdi. Among its standout items is panki, a rice flour-based delicacy steamed in a plantain leaf, which happens to be one of Mukesh Ambani’s favorites. Over time, this unique dish has gained widespread popularity.
