Andhra Muslim Woman Found Dead Weeks After Marrying Hindu Man; Honour Killing Angle Under Probe

A 26-year-old woman from Chittoor district was found dead under suspicious circumstances just months after marrying outside her religion. The woman's husband has alleged the role of the family in her death and raised concerns of a possible honour killing.

The deceased, Yasmin Banu, had married Sai Teja, a Hindu man, on February 9 this year, defying opposition from her family, reported The Times of India. The couple had been in a relationship for four years after meeting during their college days—she was pursuing an MBA, while he had completed a B.Tech degree.

Just days after their marriage, the couple approached Tirupati Rural Police seeking protection. Authorities confirmed both were consenting adults and after counselling Yasmin's parents, allowed her to return with her husband.

However, last weekend, Yasmin reportedly returned to her family home after being informed that her father, Shaukat Ali, had fallen seriously ill.

According to police, an argument broke out after her arrival, during which her father allegedly lashed out, accusing her of tarnishing the family’s honour, reported India Today.

Death & Ongoing Probe

The following day, Yasmin was found hanging in a room. While her family has claimed it was suicide, her husband has filed a complaint alleging that she was murdered and the scene staged to look like a suicide.

Speaking on the matter to TOI, Chittoor Two Town Circle Inspector Netti Kantayya confirmed that police are probing all angles, including honour killing. Yasmin’s mother is currently in custody for questioning, while other family members who had taken her from her marital home to her mother's residence are reportedly on the run.

In another incident, a mother killed her teen daughter after she developed 'a relationship' with a man from a different case in Tirupati last week.
