Sanjay Leela Bhansali is one of the most celebrated filmmakers in the industry. Every actor and actress has a dream to collaborate with him once in their lifetime. From Ram Leela to Bajirao Mastani, Bhansali has given some remarkable films that is truly a treasure to watch. One of them is his 2022 released period drama Gangubai Kathiawadi. Starring Alia Bhatt in lead role, the film is a recipient of multiple National Film Awards.
The film is based on the story of a popular Mafia Queen Gangubai Kathiwadi, who was sold to a brothel by his boyfriend for Rs 500. After she was deceived by her boyfriend, she was left devastated. She started her new life, living in Mumbai’s red-light area. Soon, she developed bond with underworld mafias, one of them was Karim Lal who gave her the reign of Kamathipura. Eventually, she became Mumbai’s Mafia Queen.

According to a report by India Today, Deepika Padukone who earlier worked with Bhansali in Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, Padmaavat, and Bajirao Mastani, was offered the lead role, but she turned down the offer due to unknown reasons. Moreover, Priyanka Chopra was also approached for Gangubai Kathiawadi, but the Desi Girl said that she had no idea about the project and was busy with the two overseas films. Similarly, Rani Mukerji was also in talks with Bhansali for the role of Ganga, but the reason behind her turning down the role is unknown.
Made in Rs 100 crore, the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial earned Rs 153 crore domestically and Rs 209 crore globally. The film was majorly shot in night, as per the requirement and narrative set by the makers. Apart from Alia Bhatt, Gangubai Kathiawadi starred Shantanu Maheshwari, Vijay Raaz, Seema Pahwa in pivotal roles, and Ajay Devgn in a cameo appearance.
