Layoffs in Sundar Pichai’s Google to affect these employees in India from…, to face job cuts due to…
Google has started global restructuring which has already led to layoffs in its Platforms and Devices division, affecting teams working on Android software, Pixel smartphones, and the Chrome browser. The global scale cuts will also impact Google’s India operations.
Redeployment Over Layoffs
In India, Google may reassign engineering staff in its Hyderabad and Bengaluru offices to projects that give more revenue, according to a media report. This strategy means that a company wants to optimize its resources and utilize them into roles that directly contribute to its financial goals.
However, the same approach is not applied to all employees. In departments like advertising, sales, and marketing, layoffs can begin by next week.
A Google spokesperson confirmed the restructuring efforts are focused on efficiency since merging its Platforms and Devices teams last year. These efforts include workforce reductions and voluntary exit schemes introduced earlier in 2023.
Layoff At Google
In early 2023 also Google laid off around 12,000 employees globally and around 6% of its workforce to align its headcount with as per product priorities. Indian offices were also affected during this period for functions like engineering, product development, and corporate roles. Divisions like Google Cloud and Waze similarly saw layoffs to enhance operational efficiency.
Earlier this year, Alphabet, Google’s parent company, also made significant cuts across key business areas, including YouTube, hardware, and advertising sales. These decisions were part of a broader effort to address slowing revenue growth and improve the financial situation affected after the arrival of AI.
This approach is being followed by a global tech where companies are working on its operations to focus on profitability. Google’s handling of engineering staff in India shows that it at least recognizes the country’s value in supporting tech giants for many years.
