Earth's crust might be thinning in real-time, a funnel is dragging crust into the mantle
Scientists have discovered that a portion of the North American craton is slowly dripping into Earth's mantle, challenging the idea that these ancient crustal structures are immovable. Seismic imaging reveals a funnel-shaped region beneath the Midwest, drawing rock downward. The Farallon slab, a sunken tectonic plate, appears to be the cause, influencing mantle flow and weakening the craton's base.
