Spl DGP (Rlys) carries out checks at Central Jail

A surprise search operation was carried out today at Central Jail, Fatahpur, in Amritsar. Special DGP (Railways), Punjab, Shashi Prabha Dwivedi visited the jail personally to oversee and review the progress of the operation. She was joined by Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar and other senior officials from the Police Commissionerate and the Jail Department. Under the close supervision of officers, around 180 police personnel were organised into separate teams and deployed across various zones of the prison. A meticulous search of the jail barracks and its surrounding areas, including the outer perimeter walls, was carried out to detect illegal activities or contraband.

The officials stated that the action was taken as part of the month-long anti-drug drive titled, “War against Drugs”, which commenced on March 1 this year. In the period from March 1 to April 14, the Amritsar Police Commissionerate registered 177 cases under the NDPS Act and arrested 340 drug traffickers. Significant seizures were made during this period, including large quantities of heroin and opium, thousands of intoxicating capsules and tablets, drug money amounting to over Rs 17 lakh and several vehicles suspected to have been used in drug-related activities. Furthermore, 14 proclaimed offenders (POs) wanted in previous cases under the NDPS Act were also arrested during the crackdown.

“This collaborative effort involved both the local police and the jail department, working in close coordination to ensure its maximum effectiveness. The police is committed to continuing such operations in future, asserting that the state is determined to root out drugs completely and ensure a safer, drug-free Punjab,” said Dwivedi.
