Wheat harvest season triggers surge in allergy, asthma cases

As the wheat harvesting season gains momentum in the district, there has been a significant rise in airborne allergens, including wheat dust, fungal spores and pollen. These allergens are triggering allergic reactions, particularly in individuals with asthma and respiratory sensitivities.

The Outpatient Departments (OPDs) at city hospitals have reported a surge of 20 per cent in patients complaining of breathlessness and bronchitis—a number that is expected to increase further in the coming days.

“With the wheat harvesting season ongoing, there has been a noticeable rise in nasobronchial allergies, especially asthma cases. Common symptoms of asthma include breathlessness, a hissing or wheezing sound while coughing, chest tightness, pain, or pressure. A further increase in asthmatic patients is expected in the coming days,” said an expert from Dayanand Medical College and Hospital.

“As the level of allergens is quite high at this time, it triggers respiratory problems not only in asthma patients but also in those with intermittent symptoms. Sensitive individuals should avoid going out. For asthma patients, who already have hyperactive airways, these pollutants cause further damage and can trigger asthma attacks—especially among the elderly and children. Such patients should use inhalers regularly and nebulise themselves if the need arises,” advised Civil Surgeon Dr Ramandeep Kaur.

Thirteen-year-old Kavya, who experiences allergies during the harvesting season, shared her struggles. “I am already having red, watery eyes, coughing and breathlessness. I am using my inhaler regularly and nebulising if needed. At school, I avoid going out during the physical education period as it triggers shortness of breath,” she said.

Excessive environmental dust can also cause eye irritation—especially in children. Some may also develop rashes due to allergic reactions to certain dust particles. “It is always better to take medicine on time and consult doctors immediately,” added the Civil Surgeon.
