Delhi CM warns against arbitrary fee hike by private schools
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Tuesday directed the Education Department to take swift and strict action against private schools in Delhi found arbitrarily increasing fees or harassing students and parents. The move comes in response to the mounting complaints from parents alleging unjustified fee hikes and threats of expulsion by school administrations.
“No school has the right to mentally harass parents or children, or hike fees without due process. There are rules in place, and those found violating them will face serious consequences,” CM Gupta said in a strongly worded statement. She added that notices will be issued to all schools against whom complaints have been received, and warned that if violations continue, their recognition may be revoked.
The Chief Minister revealed that during a public interaction earlier in the day, several parents approached her with grievances. “They shared disturbing accounts of how schools were collecting fees through unfair practices and expelling students when fees weren’t paid. This will not be tolerated,” she said.
Gupta emphasised that the Delhi Government is committed to creating an inclusive, modern, and equitable education system. “Education is not just a right—it is the most powerful tool for transformation. We are building a system that empowers students with life skills and independent thinking,” she said, highlighting initiatives such as smart classrooms and skill development programmes.
The Education Department has been instructed to immediately investigate all complaints, identify violators, and initiate appropriate action. “Any school found guilty of violating norms will be held accountable,” Gupta asserted, urging school administrations to act responsibly and in accordance with the law.
