Indian Railways: Indian Railways (IR) is among the top 5 biggest railway networks in the world as it manages a very heavy railway traffic and millions of passengers daily. The Indian Railways manages more than 7,308 stations that cater to about 13,000 trains daily carrying upwards of 20 million passengers. The railway stations of the Indian Railways earn crores of rupees every year through various revenue sources like shops or advertisements and platform tickets. Indian Railways is one of the biggest sources of revenue for the government, making it the backbone of the Indian economy. IR is one of the most popular, preferred, and cheapest modes of transport in the country.
Some of the most popular and important trains run by Indian Railways include the Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express, Duronto Express, Vande Bharat Express, Garib Rath Express, Gatimaan Express, and Tejas Express. These and other trains run short distances to long distances. Among them, there is one train that while running in the country, covers a distance equivalent to that of Singapore from India. This surely raises curiosity about where it operates, how many states it travels through, and how much time it takes. Let’s find out in detail.
The train that covers the longest distance is not Vande Bharat, Rajdhani, Duranto, or Shatabdi, but a simple superfast express train that runs from Dibrugarh in Assam to Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. Train number 22504 and 22503, Vivek Express, has to cover a distance of 4153 km to reach from one end to the other. In comparison, the distance from Delhi to Singapore is 4155 km, though this is by air. This train was launched on the occasion of Swami Vivekananda’s 150th birth anniversary. Its announcement was made in the 2011-12 rail budget and operations began in 2013.
The train has so many stops that passengers get tired of counting them. Very few passengers manage to travel from one end to the other. It stops at 59 stations throughout the journey. The train takes 74 hours to complete the entire journey. According to the railway timetable, it arrives at the destination on the fourth day after starting.
The Vivek Express travels through nine states, Assam, Nagaland, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, on its journey from Dibrugarh to Kanyakumari.
